About Us

Who are we?

Speech Matters Speech Therapy is an independent Speech and Language Therapy practice providing assessment, diagnosis and therapy for adults with communication difficulties.

My name is Vicky, I’m the lead practitioner here at Speech Matters, and I have been a Speech and Language Therapist within the NHS for several years. In addition to my work at Speech Matters, I am currently working as a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in a community learning disability team.

I am originally from and studied in Leeds. I have worked in a number of counties and have finally settled in Merseyside. I was drawn to Merseyside for the music, the beaches and the friendly locals.

I started my own practice because I am truly passionate about providing people with a timely, effective and person-centred therapy service.

Who do we work with?

We work primarily with adults with a learning disability. The individuals we work with often have associated conditions, such as Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Autism. We also work with adults with other conditions, including Dementia and Neurological conditions, such as those who have had a Stroke or Parkinson’s Disease. You can contact us for a free telephone consultation to ensure we are the right service for you or your family member.

Why is Speech Therapy necessary?

Speech and Language therapy is a fundamental service. Communication is often a skill we take for granted in our daily lives. We use language to communicate our wants and needs, to relate to others and build relationships. Communication is how we show the world who we are. One study (Hilari & Northcott, 2006) found that those with a language difficulty had 64% less contact with friends, 30% could not name a single friend. Speech Matters Speech Therapy understands that communicative ability is an essential part of human nature, and works with you to reduce the negative impact of communication difficulties on quality of life.

What do we do?

We work with you, your family and your care team to provide highly individualised treatment to maximise your communication potential. We pride ourselves on providing expert assessment and interventions at an affordable cost in a way that suits you and your family from the comfort of your own home. We work flexibly to meet your needs by providing evening and weekend appointments. We will always work hard to achieve our shared goals.

What to expect

Firstly, we will complete a thorough assessment. This will include a full assessment of your speech, language and communication strengths and needs. We will assess what information you understand, how you express yourself and how best to support you.

We offer a wide-range of tools to gather this information, including formal and informal assessment, observation and interviews. A detailed report of our findings can be provided on request.

Next, we will agree on a plan of evidence-based treatment together that will best meet your goals. Treatment might include working on one or more of the below (this list is not exhaustive):

We also use counselling and motivational interviewing skills to support therapeutic techniques.

How do we work with service providers?

We will discuss the strengths and needs of your staff team and devise a training programme specifically for you and your service. If required, we can use an audit-based approach to intensely support staff in a highly targeted intervention. All of our training packages include theoretical teaching alongside practical activities to ensure learning is taken outside of the classroom! Our training packages are delivered in a creative and engaging way, suitable for all skill levels.

Training includes any of the below and more:

We would consider working closely with a service provider on a targeted project, such as upskilling Communication Champions within your service to provide communication screening, specialised communication care plans and the ability to develop total communication environments for all service users. We can also provide service level agreements for Speech Therapy, for example you can contract half a day per week to offer your clients regular SLT input as part of their package of care.
